Top 10 list of live performances on The David Letterman Show #6

I have mentioned in earlier posts how much a really good performance on Letterman can increase your fan base. In the case of #6 on our top 10 countdown. This gentleman built a separate career out of it. Other musicians have filled in for Paul Shaffer (one may be coming up in the countdown) as band leader, but this is the only musician that I remember as actually hosting the show at the big desk. Elvis Costello sat in as the host for David Letterman when he was out in 2003. He was the witty host and the musically gifted musical guest. This also turned into a side career for Elvis who turned his gift for gab into a show on the Sundance Channel. He sits down and interviews guests for the Elvis Costello-hosted show called Spectacle.

As part of the video below Elvis has a go at his own musical career and then has a go at “What’s So Funny ‘Bout Peace, Love & Understanding?” A truly timeless Nick Lowe song that sadly may be sung way past Elvis’ and our life time. He introduced himself saying, “Every woman wants to be his pal, every man wants to sleep with him.” His band is on fire and he ends with a snarl as host, “We will be right back after these capitalist messages.”

At #6 I give you Elvis Costello as (a better?) David Letterman.

About Spool Going Round

If you like my blog and have access to programming and would like to do a radio/internet show together, please contact me. My name is Mike. I am an on-air radio DJ. I fell in love with radio in Chicago and then took that passion to someplace where I could actually get on the air. My travels took me to Seattle, WA, Eugene and Portland, OR and Washington D.C., where I was able to have my own morning show. I've had crab cakes with Warren Zevon, sat backstage and interviewed Sting, had Melissa Etheridge sing to me from the front row and I loved every minute of it. That passion for music still burns strong in me and I love to talk music and be turned on to music. Sharing new music with people is what got me interested in radio in the first place. It is wonderful to be able to talk music with you. "Go ahead you're on the air..." Read more:
