I’ve Fallen in Love with Greta Van Fleet

Greta Van Fleet have great taste in Vinyl

I had to post something on this band I ran across yesterday. What is appearing to be a weird trend, is that I find a new band that sparks my interest and then I start learning about their history and music and check live dates. The weird trend is that on more than one occasion after checking the tour dates for my new discovery, I find out that they played my town LAST NIGHT! What?

So is the case with Greta Van Fleet. I missed them playing the Tractor Tavern in Seattle the very last evening. This discourages me but then after seeing the show was sold out and there were many people enjoying this band makes me have some solace.

I’ve written a few paragraphs and haven’t mentioned Led Zeppelin yet, so let’s get that out of the way.  When you hear this band the comparisons will rise to the top rather quickly.  Now this sounds like a rather common goal for new bands jamming together.  I am sure most start out this way but then realize it’s a slippery slope, which rarely can be obtained or sound too carbon-copied. With Robert Plant turning down $800 million offers to tour with Led Zeppelin, you can easily see the appeal here.

Greta Van Fleet have created new original songs with the reference to the golden gods but it doesn’t go over like a lead balloon.  The band has 3 brothers and that seems to be a good equation for bands.  We know the 2 brothers is more of a short term fight (see Oasis, Kinks, etc.) but the 3 brother seems to add a new level of mediation much needed for longevity.

The first song that pulled me in is “Highway Tune” and putted me right into a state of elation.  Then I had to find everything out there by this band and that is why I am urging you to do the same.  It is a great reward for your time spent.   The voice from that young man on vocals will set you easily in stun-mode.  Then you catch the riffs and even a drum solo.

I personally want to thank Greta Van Fleet for being a new, young, ROCK BAND.  Rock is not dead.  Rock will never die.  As a father I know it is part of my responsibility to teach my children about rock, just as it is yours.  They may act cool and disinterested but the seed is planted.

After some internet searching this band seems to hail from near Detroit, Michigan and the band name comes from a deviation on a local woman’s name.  I urge you to listen and enjoy.  Check out there tour dates before it is too late and you realize they played in your town last night and you missed them. Why does this keep happening?

I am looking forward to my next time on the radio so I can rock out to “Highway Tune” and share the love with my listeners.

Greta Van Fleet will release a double EP titled From The Fires to be released on Nov. 10

Goodbye to Gordo. Escape is at hand for the Travelin’ man

This is true class from Tragically Hip fan and Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau

Well, the day is upon us.  Even though we knew it was coming, we hoped maybe it never would.  I wrote this article below in 2016 and we knew that Gord Downie had brain cancer and his time was short.  We were lucky to have him with us for another year.  Gord Downie won my love through his writing and performance and love for life.  I shed tears today because the world will no longer be able to see his greatness in person but his presence will be felt for generations to come.

(Repost from 2016)

2016 has been a tough time for us music lovers. With David Bowie and Prince not part of our physical world anymore, I check the morning headlines very cautiously hoping that we do not lose another one.

I am not sure if 2016 will be the end for Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip but it will be the end of touring. Earlier this year he announced a diagnoses of terminal brain cancer.  I have to believe that they determined the touring schedule around a doctor’s longevity timeline. His music and impact will, of course, live forever.

I have had the good fortune of seeing the Tragically Hip live several times.  Their music, and front-man, grabs you by the strongest emotions.  You experience feelings that you didn’t know you had.  Gord could inspire you into battle and the next minute have you on the floor in a fetal position crying uncontrollably.   I remember attending one Hip show and all of a sudden I was galvanized towards the merchandise stand to purchase a Tragically Hip hockey jersey.  They only took cash and I didn’t have cash.  They only had XL and I am not an extra large, but I found a cash machine and I purchased the XL Tragically Hip hockey sweater.   The next day when the haze cleared I was out $85 for a hockey sweater that was as big as a dress and it was the middle of summer.

Today that hockey sweater hangs in my office with my other rock and roll memorabilia.  Tonight the whole world will feel that joy and pain that Gord makes us all feel.  I especially feel for our neighbors to the north, Canada, as I know how much this band means to the whole country.

“Gord Downie is a true original who has been writing Canada’s soundtrack for more than 30 years.” – Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister

Let These Geezers Guide You To The Purple Rain

I would only call someone else a geezer because I know I live in that neighborhood as well. I mean it in a most endearing way.  I love the Waterboys and I love Prince. Here is their cover of Purple Rain because it needs to be heard. What’s not to love?

Enjoy a life filled with music.

Help Charlottesville Heal with Music

In the past year I have spent a lot of time in Charlottesville and working with the people of Charlottesville, VA.  I was devastated to see the civil war going on there.   It is now time to heal and there is no better way to do that than listening to the great jam bands of now and forever.

You can be a part of it through this livestream event.  Sending good vibes to Virginia.

The Charlottesville Area Community Foundation (CACF) has established the Heal Charlottesville Fund to support both immediate needs and longer-term reconciliation and healing efforts.

As an immediate step, the Fund will work with local mental health providers to provide access to trauma and mental health services for residents, and ensure that residents are aware of this opportunity. It will also support victims injured in the car attack who may need assistance with medical expenses.

The LOCKN’ Festival is supporting the Fund by making it easy for fans to donate via text message. Fans in attendance of watching at home on the webcast can text “LOCKN” to 444999 to donate any amount they wish.

All donations are tax-deductible, and administered by HeadCount.org. HeadCount is a non-profit civic engagement organization that also runs the “Participation Row” social action village at LOCKN’. This year, 16 non-profit organizations will be featured at LOCKN’s Particpation Row, including 10 based in Charlottesville or Nelson County. A full list can be found here.

Ben & Jerry’s is sponsoring both the webcast and Participation Row. They’ll be giving free scoops of ice cream to any LOCKN’ attendee who visits Participation Row and takes actions with the various non-profit organizations.
