SGR’s Favorite Albums of 2018

Some of Spool Going Round’s favorite Albums of 2018.

Greta Van Fleet
Anthem for a Peaceful Army

The ruckus these young rockers make is so satisfying to my old-rocker ears. Yes, they sound like Led Zeppelin PLEASE GET OVER THAT!! You are basically getting new Led Zeppelin songs from a band coming into their prime. You will never hear the original Led Zeppelin play together again. You will never see Led Zeppelin tour again. Greta Van Fleet is coming to a theater near you with a great new album and you can afford the tickets. These are not cover tunes, they are incredibly original within a proven framework. Win, Win, Win, Rock!

Johnny Marr

Call the Comet

Johnny Marr has been getting more comfortable being his own front man with each release and this one proves to be perfection.   His guitar playing is incredible without any flash or self masturbation.  He is the King of the Tone.  The tone, the mood, it all leads to 12 songs that have a fun 80’s groove but never sound the same.  Johnny is also secure enough now to embrace his years, he understands his importance with The Smiths and is bringing that into his new music as well, we are all the better for it.

Steve Perry

There was something so comforting about hearing this voice from the past again.  Sure it’s a bit gruffy but it is clearly Steve Perry.  It is not Journey but it is the next volume of a Steve Perry solo career that many of us were missing.  I got it on LP to enjoy the warmer tones from the vinyl.  There is No Erasin’ the impact this voice has had on our history hear on earth.  Welcome Back Steve!

Kamasi Washington

Heaven and Earth

A certain movie called LA LA Land saved Jazz and now Kamasi is keeping it cool.  A great musical journey with enough vocals to keep the jazz in a song format.

Con Todo El Mundo

Great chill music to have on at all times.  It sounds exotic like a trip to Spain.

Leon Bridges

Good Thing

I will always love soul music.  I was raised on it and it is the music that moves me.  I thank Leon Bridges for keeping it classic and classy.   Anyone who considers themselves hip hop or R & B needs to understand the foundation.  Leon gets it.

Honorable mention

Arctic Monkeys-Tranquility based hotel and casino

Richard Ashcroft- Natural Rebel

Lo Moon – Lo Moon

The Beat featuring Ranking Roger

The English Beat featuring Dave Wakeling

Buddy Guy- The blues is alive and well

About Spool Going Round

If you like my blog and have access to programming and would like to do a radio/internet show together, please contact me. My name is Mike. I am an on-air radio DJ. I fell in love with radio in Chicago and then took that passion to someplace where I could actually get on the air. My travels took me to Seattle, WA, Eugene and Portland, OR and Washington D.C., where I was able to have my own morning show. I've had crab cakes with Warren Zevon, sat backstage and interviewed Sting, had Melissa Etheridge sing to me from the front row and I loved every minute of it. That passion for music still burns strong in me and I love to talk music and be turned on to music. Sharing new music with people is what got me interested in radio in the first place. It is wonderful to be able to talk music with you. "Go ahead you're on the air..." Read more:
